I read this Billboard article last night and got immediately infuriated. Before I go in, let’s recap the article.
“I don’t want to rap forever… I don’t want to be 50 years old and rapping, man. I’m pretty sure nobody wants to do that,” Thug, 22-years old, told GQ magazine.
The rapper continued to focus on Jay Z, 45-years old, specifically: “I’m pretty sure Jay Z don’t wanna rap right now.”
Thug believes that after a certain age, young people don’t listen to a rapper’s music: “If you’re 30, 40 years old, you’re not getting listened to by minors. Like, Jay Z has some of the sickest lyrics ever, but I would never buy his CD, just because of my age and because of his age. By the time I turn that old, I ain’t gonna be doing what he’s doing.”
Where do I start? First, let’s be clear … Hov raps for sport now. He doesn’t have to as Young suggests in the article. Secondly his suggestion that kids aren’t listening to rappers in their 30s and 40s is just not a fact. Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, J. Cole, Kanye West, are all in the 30 club with Drake just a little over a year from joining ….. and they all are the top selling hip-hop artists out right now. If you’re making great music that’s connecting to listeners why should you stop?….because of age. Young Thug should just stick to being Birdman’s bae.
