We hear congratulations are in order for the creators and actors of the coming-of-age movie Dope.
According to published reports, the film brought about a bidding war. Bids were in from Fox Searchlight, A24, Lionsgate, and others, but the brawl ended with Open Road and Sony Pictures still standing, scoring a $7 million dollar deal and negotiating a $20 million dollar marketing commitment. The film garnered one of the biggest deals at Sundance so far.
Set in the post-hip hop, gang-infested neighborhood of Inglewood, Calif., Dope tackles the story of a high school geek (Shameik Moore) trying to get into Harvard while dodging drug dealers and other obstacles.
My two-cents: Can’t wait to see it.
