A$AP Rocky Speaks on A$AP Yam’s Passing

asaprocSince Yam’s passing on this past Sunday (Jan 18), we’ve understandably heard nothing from the Mob’s franchise player Rocky.

We’ve seen the heartbreaking picture of him in the hospital and then later he whisked by in Paris at Fashion Week and then surprisingly turned up again at Sundance to celebrate his acting debut in the coming of age movie “Dope.”

Admittedly I was really surprised to see photos of him surface in Utah. I wondered how he was emotionally holding up. It had to be a hard week for him.

He took to the stage to kick-off the premiere’s after-party, but he only performed two songs before abruptly leaving the stage — he dedicated the final song to Yams.

It seems that my initial thoughts were right. The Harlem native was still mourning.

“That performance — that was just going to stop me from crying,” Rocky said, speaking for the first time in detail about Yams’ death. “I had to address it, because the whole time I was rapping and I wasn’t into it, which is sad, but I just gotta keep it real. I can’t front. It’s even harder knowing that I gotta fly out in less than an hour just to go bury him. That’s the part that eats at me.”

My two-cents: Keep your head up brother. True music heads have this short list of artists they really want to see excel despite their antics, talent and circumstances. Rocky’s on my short list.
