Looks like weed smokers in Philly just caught aIt looks like The City of Brotherly love is showing some compassion toward marijuana users.
The Root reports that weed smokers will no longer be arrested when found in possession of weed, but rather fined. “People caught in possession of less than an ounce will be fined $25—people caught getting high will be fined $100,” the site states.
The new legislation which begins Oct 20, requires officers to ticket those who decide to light up. The new act also hopes to erase the racial disparities in the criminal justice system. “Of the 4,614 arrests Philadelphia police made for small amounts of marijuana in 2013, 83 percent targeted African Americans, according to local media, even though studies show the number of black and white Americans who consume pot is roughly the same,” said Councilman Jim Kenney.
This new law makes Philly the largest U.S. city to decriminalize marijuana.
