The contract for Running back Ray Rice has been terminated by the Baltimore Ravens and he’s been indefinitely suspended from the NFL after TMZ released the elevator surveillance footage of Ray punching his then fiancé (now wife) in the face and knocking her unconscious.
Ray was originally suspended for 2 games for the incident back in July, however, the NFL was highly criticized for what seemed like a pat on the wrist.
He later stated in a letter: “I didn’t get it right.” Goodell also wrote: “My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment, and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families. I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future reflect our values.”
The incident took place on Feb. 15th at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The video shows the couple entering the elevator in a heated argument. Once inside Rice strikes Palmer once, she hits back and then Rice hits her again and she falls unconscious.
Rice was charged with felony aggravated assault in the case, but in May he was accepted into a pretrial intervention program that allowed him to avoid jail time. Since the incident, the couple have married and Rice has undergone counseling.
The league announced via Twitter that Rice’s new suspension was “based on new video evidence that became available today.”
My two-cents: Everything you do in the dark always comes to light. This was my first time even seeing the video. SMH. For me it was the punch, it’s the way he dragged her out. Repeat offender.
