J. Cole, Nelly Speak on Michael Brown Murder

JColeThis weekend, many celebs used their platform to speak on the murder of Michael Brown, the unarmed black Missouri teenager who was killed by a police officer.

Michael was shot at least six times, including twice in the head, a preliminary private autopsy performed on Sunday found.

Two days after dropping his emotional “Be Free” on-wax reaction to the killing, J. Cole visited the victim’s hometown of Ferguson, MO speaking with residents in the area.

On Friday, Frank Ocean took to his Tumblr page analyzing the police press conference with the following thoughts:

You see that black woman standing up there? I wonder if she was called to stand behind the governor because she’s black. I wonder if i’m supposed to think Missouri’s gov’t is pro-black because of her being stood up there with those other black men being all black and everything. I wonder if she was off the clock while she stood up there. If she was off the clock..then i wonder if she was getting paid for her time off like the guy who shot Michael 8 times. What’s that guy’s name by the way?

Meanwhile, a celebrity football game yesterday, hosted by Chris Brown and Diddy’s son Quincy ended with several entertainers showing solidarity in support of justice for Michael. In attendance was The Game, Trey Songz, Shad Moss, Wale and Nelly. Following Team Breezy’s 42-21 win, Nelly asked all in attendance to stand with hands up, in a showing of protest of Brown’s murder. “If anybody can sympathize with what my city is going through, it’s this city of L.A. right now on so many levels,” said Nelly. “So for that respect alone, I’m asking you, I’m begging you, and I’m pleading for you to just raise your hands for a second.”

Despite the rally of support, tensions have increased today in MO as unauthorized tear gas was used on the masses by police.

Governor Jay Nixon held a press conference this afternoon to announce that a state of emergency has been declared in Ferguson, according to The Huffington Post. He also enacted a curfew that will last from midnight until 5 a.m.

“If we’re going to have justice, we must first have and maintain peace,” Nixon said this afternoon. “The eyes of the world are watching.”
