So Nicki Minaj is addressing her shade no shade acceptance speech at the 2014 BET Awards on Sunday (June 30).
When she picked up the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist agains strong competitor Iggy Azalea, she amused the audience with her no holds bar speech: “What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.” She then followed with “No, no shade. No, no no shade.”
Welp today, she has taken to Twitter to clarify the “no shade” and speak on female artists.
Dear Nicki, please own the shade you threw. The problem is people actually like Iggy. She’s fresh, she’s attractive and she her flow is nice. Not sure Nicki was ready for that backlash or if she even imagined that, that many people liked this newbie. I do think it’s admirable when people can write, produce and perform but I don’t feel that people who only perform are less than. There’s something that can be said for people who can deliver art in such a way that you connect with them. Sometimes even your most skilled writers and singers don’t connect. We all know plenty of great singers/writers that have never seen a platinum album. If that connection wasn’t a gift, we’d all be doing it. In this fickle entrainment business, it’s never been simply about the craft. There are lots of attributes that make people stars and I take nothing from them. It’s room for everyone. No need to throw shade.
