Well after selling a million albums during the first week of his debut album and coming off of a 5 year hiatus, everyone is wondering what 50’s fifth project, Animal Ambition, did on the charts.
The numbers are in and 50 sold a total of 46,728 albums, making Animal Ambition the lowest selling album out of his catalogue. This is 50’s first album since parting ways with his long time label Shady/Aftermath.
Hmmm …. well before we call this a flop, keep in mind album sales as an independent artist is very different from being on a major label.
Let’s use some very conservative hypothetical numbers. Assume that with a major record contract, an artist would only keep 20% of his profits (after marketing, distribution and production expenses). If an album costs $9.99 and Animal Ambition had sold 500,000 copies, a typical artist would make $1 million. By distributing independently 50 could conservatively keep 70% of the profits which equates to $3.5 million!
Financially, there’s no need to cry for 50, but maybe you guys weren’t playing when you said he couldn’t make a comeback.
