Angie Martinez has always been one of my fav DJs and interviewers. She’s able to connect with musicians and those ties typically allow them to open up a little more. Even if it’s as tiny as a smile, that’s more than the mean mug they give others. In this particular interview (BELOW) with rapper Trinidad James things got a little heated when the word ratchet came up and I was glad to see my girl just hold her ground but be respectful.
Trinidad rose to fame in a record 4 weeks or so with the hit “All Gold Everything.” It is ratchet music. Despite the fact that he doesn’t like that label. I’m calling it that. Ratchet to me means someone lacing (or ignoring) tact, class or socially acceptable behaviors.
I believe some people choose ratchet living, while for others its so inbred its truly who they are.
I can’t decide which Trinidad is and honestly I’m not sure he knows. In this interview he flips, flops. Although he didn’t articulate it, I believe his true concern is just not having his craft taken serious, but I’m not him so I’ll never know. Either way …. I do want to say I actually like his breakout hit. I bought it. I rock it. Everyone needs a little ratchetness in their life from time-to-time. If I were him, I would cash in on the moment. #IJS
