The fine people at Forbes were forced to recant their words this week when they published an article about raptress Iggy Azalea with the headline, “Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman.”
Here’s an excerpt of the article: “For the past several years, Nicki Minaj has been the prominent woman in hip hop, but it seems there has been a change. Not only has Minaj been oddly quiet for months, she has said she will no longer be releasing radio-ready pop/hip hop blends, instead going back to her pure rap roots, leaving a void to be filled by none other than Iggy.”
Well readers apparently voiced their disagreement to the point where the magazine re-worded the title to read: “Hip-Hop’s Unlikely New Star: A White, Blonde, Australian Woman” and issued the following update:
“The title of this article has been changed from its original version — “Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman” — because it did not accurately reflect the content of the piece. The author offers sincere apologies to anyone who was offended by it.”
SMH. I really hate when people unfamiliar with the culture and music carry themselves as subject matter experts and write reckless articles. In this case, I feel bad that Iggy was collateral damage. Iggy – in my opinion – is definitely talented and yep … I definitely see her doing big things one day. Just not today.
