Quick Thoughts Vol. 10

So here are some quick thoughts on current stories:

pd

North West.  So days after their daughter’s birth, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have finally named their child.  It’s North – North West.  Although I wouldn’t have named my child North – especially if their last name is West -I don’t hate it.  What I do hate is the built in pun.  The media is already having a field day.  I can’t imagine the fun her classmates will have.  And by fun I mean bullying.  Another thing I dislike is Blue (Beyone’s daughter) and Apple (Gwyneth’s daughter). North….(repeating it to myself) isn’t bad.  Turns out there’s some meaning behind North. North can easily be associated with a higher power. They say God is the most high, but there is also a popular saying called “North of X.” North of X also translates into ‘Greater than x,’ or ‘More than x,’ which means nothing is greater than it. The baby will be nicknamed NoriNori is a Japanese name, which means belief.

I know some people feel like this name could have some sort of negative impact on her future, but let’s be honest.  With her parents having a net worth in the neighborhood of $40 million, I think North is just fine.

Paula Deen in Hot Water.  The way to my heart is definitely my stomach. Despite the fact that I’ve remained on the thinner end of the spectrum, I am a foodie.  I love food.  I eat when I’m sad.  I eat when I’m especially happy. I eat in the in-betweens when I’m bored. I even like to watch cooking shows. So it pains me to have to boycott Paula Deen.  Her cooking is soooo good.  BUT….  Do we all not know by now that you can not go around calling people the N-word? I thought we were 20/20 on that.

Real quick …. Things started going south for Paula last week after her deposition in a discrimination lawsuit was leaked. By Friday, the Food Network announced it was terminating her contract and immediately pulled her two shows from the network. (Kudos to them for reacting so quickly.  Normally Al Sharpton has to crack skulls for things to move.)

At the center of the lawsuit is Lisa T. Jackson, who for several years considered herself Paula’s right hand, helping manage her restaurants and becoming close to the Deen inner circle.  Lisa filed the suit in March 2012, after she spent six months trying to turn around Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House in Savannah, Ga., which is largely run by Paula’s brother, Earl W. Hiers. At Uncle Bubba’s, the federal lawsuit contends, racial slurs and jokes about women, Jews and blacks were common.  Although Paula and her brother have maintained that Lisa was bent on revenge, it was Paula’s admission to using the N-word that caused the windstorm. Apparently she thought that this case would dismissed, so she spoke in her usual folksy style.  Negative!

I don’t think that Paula dislikes African-Americans.  Although it sounds like a cliché, I’m sure she has some fairly close friends that are African-Americans.  The problem comes when you feel like our friendship is a pass to be disrespectful and pass it off as friendly banter.  Or when you feel like your antics are above the law – in this case discrimination.
