So for a full year, I have been on a fairly passive hunt for jellies. I wasn’t taking trips specifically to find them, but I was certainly conscious of them as I browsed shoes. Today, I finally scored a pair (at an affordable price of course. See my pic, but please ignore those tan lines. Flip-flops are a necessary evil.)
You remember jellies, right? Jellies are one of my favorite childhood and fashion memories.
The soft, uber comfortable plastic (yes, plastic) flats were popular in the late 80s/ 90s. They were also cheap as the dickens.
At the time, I wasn’t quite old enough to wear traditional flats, but my mom thought that jellies were “PG” enough. No adults were wearing shoes that were transparent.
Well now – like everything else – they have returned. But most of the attractive pairs are no longer cheap. I happen to think it’s because designers know that people would possibly be willing to pay for that nostalgic piece of fashion. The folks at Yves Saint Laurent created a platform version for about $500. SMH … No ma’am. Not for plastic. Five hundred dollars completely bursts that memory-lane bubble. I’m more at the $20 end of the spectrum.
I know they’re essentially plastic shoes, but this can work. This time around I’m more than old enough to spice them up. Paired with a wife-beater, skinny jeans and fashionable scarf, I could make this childhood memory grown & sexy.
