According to Billboard, Apple Inc.’s music chief Robert Kondrk has been urging major labels to pull a Beyonce in an effort to speed up sluggish digital download sales.
In meetings held during Grammy Week in LA, Kondrk was clear in revealing that such a release could include other music retailers, but not streaming services like Pandora and Spotify. Since digital track sales fell 5.7 percent from 1.34 billion units to 1.26 billion units in 2013, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Kondrk is trying to come up with techniques to see that streaming services are not included in the fun.
Beyonce’s self-titled surprise album shattered iTunes records, selling 465,000 copies in its first week of release on iTunes without a physical copy on shelves.
So far, only rapper Kid CuDi has implemented the Bey method, releasing the surprise album, Satellite Flight, only to digital music retailers led by iTunes last week.
