Quick Thoughts Vol. 4

Here are some quick thoughts on some current stories.

Collins_romantic grungeNBA Player Comes Out of the Closet.  Well, it’s finally happened.  After weeks of speculation, professional sports has its first openly gay player.  Yesterday, Nets player Jason Collins made history when he came out of the closet.  “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center,” Collins said in a Sports Illustrated story.  “I’m black. And I’m gay.”  My twitter account blew up with all sorts of support from the likes of FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama) and Bill Clinton.  Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant also offered their best wishes.   I know some people hate to broach the topic, but America needs that guy.  We’ve got to start personalizing the inequalities that still plague the best country in the world. As long as we don’t know people “like that,” many people are afforded the opportunity to ignore the issues, the hate, the injustice.  It seems like we made big strides in race and for some reason took a break before addressing all the other problems.  Did that wear us out?  I hope not because there are groups of people going through those same horrible acts as we get our second wind.  Imagine how tired they are.  Much success to Jason.  I just hope that he’s built for this ride he’s about to take.

Teen Mom 2 sells tape for six-figures.  So this girl really sold her sex tape for distribution.  SMH.  This is really sad.  I almost wonder if there’s some sort of mental issue there that would allow such bad judgment.  Who am I kidding?  I watch the show, and I can plainly see that Farrah has issues.  She’s very hot and cold, but I’ll leave an official diagnosis for the doctors.  What I don’t get is how any of the girls on the series could get the opportunity of a Teen Mom/ MTV platform and not make good use of.  I know it’s hard being a teen mom, but you’ve got to admit that you’ve got a leg up on the competition when you have a camera crew following you around.  To this day, NOT one of the girls has done anything remotely positive.  I know it’s just a reality show, but that hurts my heart to see young people with potential squander it.

“Two and a Half Men” is returning next season without star Angus T. Jones as a regular.  Thank goodness. Several months ago, Angus made a video  linked to the Voice of prophecy Seventh-Day Adventist church,  blasting “Two and a Half Men.”   He said he no longer wanted to be associated with the show, the show was “filth” and asked followers to “please stop watching.”  I’ll start by saying I don’t know what he was going through.  And I understand the difficulty of finding yourself involved in something you’ve matured out of mentally.  However, there’s a time and a place.  I thought the way he chose to use his freedom of speech was extremely unprofessional.  I think being a working part of the arts is a blessing so if Angus doesn’t want to be there, I’m sure there are a million more waiting to replace him.  Kudos to the staff at that show for holding it together when I know they had to be shocked and pissed  that one of their own would sabotage.
