12 Years of Slave Wins Big

12yrs2For those that are interested in the Golden Globes, here’s some highlights …

It took practically all night. But just when it seemed like one of the most acclaimed movies was getting snubbed, the historical flick “12 Years a Slave” won the Hollywood Press Association’s final award of the night for best motion picture drama.

“I’m a little bit in shock. ‘Roll, Jordan, Roll!” director Steve McQueen, a Brit, said, referencing a Gospel tune from the film.

Despite the last, but huge win, a number of Twitter users weren’t happy with the lack of diversity among the winners throughout the night. Using the hashtag #notbuyingit, they sounded off: “Winners: white men. Losers: everybody else.”

Meanwhile, another big of the night was “American Hustle.” The film won best comedy or musical motion picture. It also earned trophies for its two leading ladies – Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence.

Coincidentally, the wins thrust both “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle” into the top positions for the Academy Awards’ best picture honor. The Globes are often seen as an Oscar forecaster.

Another film, the space thriller “Gravity,” also earned an edge, winning best director for Alfonso Cuaron at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual shindig.

“This is for the hundreds of people who made this film possible, and because of my thick accent, they end up doing what they thought I said, not what I said,” the Mexican director said.

Other big film winners include “Dallas Buyers Club” which won two acting honors for motion pictures: Jared Leto’s supporting actor prize and Matthew McConaughey’s nod for best actor in a drama.

Cate Blanchett won the Globe for best actress in a drama (motion picture) for her performance in “Blue Jasmine.” Leonardo DiCaprio won best actor in a musical or comedy film for his performance in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Oh and if you missed any of the fashion that hit the red carpet, take a look at the most noticeable looks. With baby in tote, Kerry Washington is slaying the competition.
