What’s Beauty?

gwy_CT PrecisaWell, rag mag People is getting a lot of feedback on their selection of Gwyneth Paltrow as their most beautiful person.  In fact, New York Daily News felt the need to publish an article titled 5 Reasons Why Gwyneth Is Not Most Beautiful. Ouch!

According to People insiders, among the reasons that she was selected – besides appearance –  is that she appears to be a great wife and mother, approachable, an entrepreneur, she’s fairly green and no matter what anyone says about her, she keeps coming back for more.  She’s fearless.  And to their staff, that equals beauty.

Well that sounds great on paper.  But the truth is, no matter how much fluff we spew about people being beautiful both inside and out, most people only think of beauty as skin deep. And that beauty has a certain type.  It’s not necessarily the fresh faced, rail thin image of Gwyneth.

Personally, I’ve always found Gwyneth pretty.  She has a regal, simple beauty.  Not commercial. And although she’s often described as pompous, I’ve always found her charming and comfortable in her own skin.  Even if that skin was filled with privilege.  It’s what she is and she doesn’t try to pretend to be anything different. That’s pretty admirable to me. #IJS

That said, I’m okay with People’s selection and the reasons why.  Yes, Halle Barry and Beyonce (slight eye-roll while typing.  I told you I’m hot and cold with her.) are gorgeous, but I really wish we would celebrate some more non-commercial or non-traditional types of beauty. Congrats to Gwyneth.
