It’s not secret that JAY-Z has been a staunch supporter of criminal justice reform through a number of different avenues over the years including producing docu-series based on the lives of Trayvon Martin and Kalief Browder or using his platform to question the sentencing of Meek Mill. On Monday (March 19), Roc Nation took a step further by aannouncing their financial backing of the upcoming app Promise, which looks to target the mass incarceration epidemic.
“We are increasingly alarmed by the injustice in our criminal justice system,” Hov said in a statement. “Money, time and lives are wasted with the current policies. It’s time for an innovative and progressive technology that offers sustainable solutions to tough problems. Promise’s team … is building an app that can help provide ‘liberty and justice for all’ to millions.”
Promise will use a smart-phone app to bring a “cost-effective and more humane alternative to incarceration.” It will be available to both government agencies and inmates. The program plans to assist those who cannot afford to defend themselves in court. The decarceration startup will lay out a strategic plan for each citizen within the agenda to execute their obligations to the legal system so no missteps are taken.
Promise’s approach involves a three-step process where first a plan is made through their intake and assessment period before providing support during a person’s legal proceedings and finally continuing to supervise the individual so they can remain outside the eye of law enforcement. The app is without a release date but will be officially introduced on Tuesday (March 20) at Y Combinator Demo Day by creators Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins and Diana Frappier.
