The premiere episode of CNN’s The Van Jones Show occurred over the weekend with JAY-Z as his first guest… and Jones did not hold back.
In the segment’s most candid moment, Jay was grilled about his marriage to Beyoncé and the infidelity that inspired much of her 2016 Lemonade album as well as his own 4:44 album – both of which was nominated for album of the year at Sunday’s Grammy Awards.
“If you haven’t experienced love and you don’t understand it, if you don’t have the tools to move forward, then you’re going to have complications. Period.” He also noted that his choosing to “fight” for his marriage was an effort to “break the cycle” and give his children a different perspective on what marriage looks like.
When asked for advice on how other men can respond to their own infidelity, Jay noted that “the best apology is changed behavior.” He also noted the importance of understanding your partner and being strong enough to hear criticism and sadness. If you can do that, “The other side is beautiful — at least for us,” he said.
