The fifth-graders at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Paideia Academy in Chicago got a surprise treat Wednesday (Dec. 6) when Chance the Rapper showed up in their halls. The occasion? SocialWorks, a nonprofit co-founded by the Grammy-winning artist, received a $1 million grant from Google.org.
SocialWorks strives to expose young people across Chicago to programming by helping provide the necessary support in arts, music and coding.
The news was announced at the school’s assembly.
Shortly after, Alphabet’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, David Drummond, announced that Google.com will also donate $500,000 to Chicago Public Schools’ CS4All, the city’s computer science education program.
