Jay Z was named as the “anonymous” buyer of Jean Michel Basquait’s 1982 painting “Mecca.”
The NY Post reports that the painting was snagged for $4.5 million. The estimate was between $4 and $6 million so I suppose Hov didn’t do that bad. Donned in orange, white and black acrylic the piece features NY’s Empire State Building under a Basquiat crown.
Fans of Hov know that he has had love for the Brooklyn painter, who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. “It ain’t hard to tell, I’m the new Jean Michel/Surrounded by Warhols, my whole team ball/Twin Bugattis outside the Art Basel,” he raps on “Picasso Baby.”
Earlier this year, Jay bought a Basquiat painting done by Swizz Beatz. The painting was done on the hood of a Mercedes Benz. Jigga purchased the painting for an undisclosed amount.
